Templestowe Garden Maintenance
November 22, 2016An important part of Greenbelt Garden Care’s garden maintenance in Templestowe includes caring for your plants throughout the year. Our team of experienced gardeners have recently visited a large property in Templestowe to care for the large number of roses in the garden.
As summer’s hot weather is upon us now, plant growth is at it’s peak and roses are in full bloom. Most people think roses are to be pruned in winter but we also prune in summer. Our team don’t just dead head rose blooms when caring for them at this time of year, but prune as if we were picking a bunch of roses, cutting the stems of the spent flowers about 30cm long. This way the bush is trimmed to encourage new growth and a beautiful Autumn flush of blooms 6-8 weeks later.
We also spread a thick layer of mulch over the soil in all the rose beds to stop the soil drying out in the hot weather. Rose leaves and even their stems can get sunburnt if the soil is allowed to become too dry. We installed an irrigation system earlier in the year at this Templestowe property choosing a dripper system which keeps the soil moist in the rose beds. Roses like a deep soaking when being watered and it’s important to water the roots of the rose bush rather than wetting the foliage. Fungal diseases like black spot can attack rose bushes if their leaves are wet for long periods during warm weather. If you really have to water overhead it’s better to do it in the morning rather than in the evening because this way the leaves have time to dry out during the day.
Lastly our gardeners applied a pellet form of organic rose fertiliser to promote new growth and abundant blooms. We use one which contains potash as this will improve the colour and quality of the rose blooms as well as helping to minimise fungal disease in the plants.
