Easy Steps To A Greener Lawn

September 10, 2017

Are you always looking at other people’s gardens wondering what they do to have a lush, green lawn? Unless you have green thumbs you may not know where to start when you look at your garden and lawn. And lets face it, most of us are so busy working we just want to relax on our days off.

Here at Greenbelt Garden Care we can give you some easy tips on lawn care and garden maintenance. Having a great looking garden doesn’t have to take too much time so read our simple steps to creating a green lawn that’s the envy of your neighbours.

Feed your lawn four times a year with a complete fertliser- just before winter to help strengthen the grass roots and increase nitrogen storage allowing the grass to be ready for the spring growth. In September feed again as the lawn comes out of hibernation, ready for the heavy growth season. Refertilise during spring as the active grass growth uses up much of it’s stored energy. During summer the lawn needs nutrients to cope with the hot, dry weather so feed once more! When applying fertliser don’t forget to water it in well.

Water¬†your lawn during the warmer months of the year only once or twice a week. Water¬†long enough to moisten the soil below to about 6 inches to encourage growth of a deeper root system and a more drought resistant lawn. Watering every day isn’t good for the lawn as it causes a shallow root system so that the lawn dries our more easily. Watering too frequently can also lead to disease. If possible water grass early in the morning before the heat of the day to reduce water evaporation.

Mow your lawn regularly to encourage growth of a lawn thick enough to crowd out weed growth. Ensure your mower has sharp blades to give an even cut; dull blades can leave grass ends jagged and open to disease. To protect the lawn’s root system from drying out, adjust the height of the mower to cut no more than one third of the length of the grass blades.
