Garden Maintenance North Balwyn

July 28, 2025

As the days get longer and the weather warms up we can smell spring in the air! So now is the time to start those important gardening tasks that will ensure your garden will be looking it’s best right through the spring and summer months.

  1. Prepare Your Soil: soil can become compacted so dig  your garden beds over and add compost or well-rotted manure. Not only will this improve drainage but it will provide nutrients for plants’ new spring growth.
  1. Prune and Tidy: now’s the time to give your garden a good clean-up by pruning any dead branches and cutting back perennials that have become overgrown. Hedges can be shaped as well.
  1. Planting: spring is perfect for planting both vegetables and flowering annuals. It’s recommended though to wait until risk of the last frost has passed before planting frost sensitive vegetables like tomatoes.
  1. Mulch and Weed: with spring comes new growth and that includes weeds! While the soil is still soft it’s easier to pull weeds out. Then the addition of a  layer of mulch will not only suppress the weeds but will regulate soil temperatures and help the soil to retain water as the warmer months arrive.
  1. Fertilise Plants and lawns: plant growth is rapid in spring so now is the time to feed them with a general all-purpose fertiliser.  A slow-release fertiliser for lawns will provide sustained supply of nutrients for the season and regular mowing  (but not too short) will encourage dense growth.
  1. Pest and Disease Watch: pests like aphids, slugs, and whiteflies can be seen in the warm weather so check new growth regularly and treat early with an organic spray or neem oil. Use copper spray to prevent fungal diseases like black spot or powdery mildew on roses.
  1. Water Wisely: with warmer weather and sunny days the garden beds and lawns start to dry out.  Aim to water deeply a few times a week rather than lightly every day. To save time spent hand watering install a drip irrigation system now, before the heat of summer arrives.
